The actuators I developed were attached to a wearable sleeve we called Second Skin to create an assistive device for improving the mobility and coordination of infants with cerebral palsy. The leg model pictured here has one simple knee joint and is sized and weighted to match a healthy 12-month-old baby. At just 12.5 psi, the device was able to create a full extension or a partial flexion of the knee. For this stage of the project, I modeled the infant leg and designed test equipment for fully characterizing the extension and flexion of the device. This work was later presented at the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
